Three ways to stay connected
Choose according to your needs: a local number, eSIM compatibility and the time you can spend getting connected.
Physical SIM
A local SIM needs a suitable slot and registration with the seller. Check whether local calls and SMS are included. With one slot, you may need to remove your home SIM. Confirm documents, validity, top-ups and activation.
Best for: a local number or a phone without eSIM support.
eSIM
A digital profile installs without a plastic card. Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Travel plans may be data-only: a local number, calls and SMS are not automatically included. Validity and activation depend on the plan.
Best for: preparing in advance without needing a new number.
Roaming
Use your home SIM or eSIM on a foreign network. Check Egypt coverage, data, call and SMS charges, limits and automatic renewal. Keeping your usual number does not mean mobile data is included.
Best for: a short trip with clear terms from your home carrier.
Egypt eSIM from SimplSIM
Choose a package on the Egypt page in the separate SimplSIM store. Before buying, check device compatibility, validity and activation conditions. Plan selection and purchase take place in SimplSIM.

Choosing the right option for your trip
For a few days: check your home carrier’s roaming first. It may suit you if Egypt terms are clear and you need your usual number. Compare the total trip cost, not just the price per gigabyte.
For maps, messaging and bookings: consider a travel eSIM on a compatible phone. Do not assume it includes a local number. Compare local carriers if you need local calls or SMS.
For a longer stay: check top-ups, renewals and rules for using an imported phone. Plan validity and device rules are separate matters; confirm current requirements with the carrier and official authorities.
For multiple countries: check the exact coverage list. A regional plan does not necessarily include Egypt. For remote work, check tethering and prepare a backup connection.
Physical SIM: what to check in Egypt
Buy a local SIM from an official operator branch. Confirm passport and stay-document registration, validity and included services before paying.
Before paying, confirm data allowance, validity, calls, SMS, total setup cost, top-ups and cancellation. Do not assume a SIM automatically includes unlimited data or a local number.
Ask the seller to test activation on your phone and keep the receipt. Store your home SIM safely if you remove it. A physical SIM does not bypass a carrier lock.
Does your phone support eSIM?
Check the exact model and regional version in the manufacturer’s documentation. Another phone in the same range supporting eSIM does not prove yours does. Also check the service’s supported-device list.
On iPhone, look for Add eSIM in cellular settings. Android labels vary; look under SIMs or mobile networks. If the option is missing, ask the manufacturer. Seeing it does not prove compatibility with a particular plan.
Your phone must be unlocked for other carriers. On iPhone, check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. For other models, ask the seller or your home carrier.
Check dual-line use, the number of active profiles and hotspot support. These depend on the model, software, carrier and plan.
Installing an eSIM: preparation and first steps
1. Before buying, check your device, coverage, data, validity and activation conditions. Find out whether validity starts on installation, manual activation or first connection; there is no universal rule.
2. Save the provider’s instructions and use a reliable internet connection. Obtain the QR code or installation details through the provider’s supported method. Keep the activation code private.
3. Add the eSIM in your phone’s SIM settings following the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a QR code, app or manual entry only if supported by the provider. Name the profile Egypt, for example.
4. When needed, select the travel line for mobile data. Disable data roaming on your home line and automatic data switching if it could cause charges. Enable roaming on the travel eSIM only as instructed by its provider.
5. After activation, test a map or browser with Wi-Fi off and check data usage. If it fails, check the selected line, active package and provider settings, then contact support. Do not delete the profile first: reinstalling may be restricted.
Mobile connectivity in Egypt
For a local SIM, NTRA requires foreign customers to present an original valid passport and valid residency documentation at an operator branch. Confirm what documentation applies to your visit and the SIM’s validity.
Egypt regulates imported mobile phones. NTRA’s January 2026 notice retains a temporary tourist exemption for 90 days; confirm current eligibility and procedures, particularly for longer or repeat stays.
A travel eSIM does not guarantee reception across desert or remote routes. Check supported networks and plan terms; save maps and accommodation details offline.
Before-departure checklist
Download offline maps, your accommodation address, tickets and setup instructions. Save support contacts for the provider and your home carrier so you can find them without mobile data.
Estimate usage for maps, messaging, video, cloud sync, work and tethering. Limit background downloads and updates on mobile data. Check that validity covers your whole trip.
Prepare a backup, such as accommodation Wi-Fi or another available connection. Review your home SIM settings after arrival and on returning. Speed and coverage are not guaranteed everywhere.
